A local Paralympic athlete has won gold in Tokyo.

The Paralympics, which always follow the Olympic Games but never seem to get nearly as much attention, are no less a triumph of human strength and endurance, if not more.

And Sam Grewe, a graduate of Northridge High School, displayed his strength at the age of 13 when he decided to have his right leg amputated after a diagnosis of an aggressive bone cancer.

Five years ago he won Silver at the Paralympic games in Rio in the high jump. Tuesday he did one better, finishing with the Gold.

Grewe’s next challenge? Medical school at The University of Michigan.
