It’s Labor Day Weekend, but beach-goers are being urged to stay out of the water at two beaches at Indiana Dunes National Park.
There are advisories in place at the Portage Lakefront and West Beach at Indiana Dunes National Park after routine measurements discovered excessive levels of e-coli bacteria in the water at both locations.
Neither beach is closed, in part because a lifeguard is never present at the Portage Lakefront. Lifeguards will be on guard at West Shore this weekend and if the levels remain high, there is a chance that the beach will close.
The reason for the readings isn’t clear but numbers can spike after a big rain event. Testing will be done each day until bacteria levels meet the state standard again.

Feel free to research “combined sewer overflow” systems and then try to believe the claims that the reason for the spikes after a big rain event aren’t clear…
