The St. Joseph County Council voted this week to extend the Motels4Now homeless shelter program through March.

The program will cost $829,000 and will be funded through the county’s share of federal COVID relief dollars from the American Rescue Plan, and helps to shelter the homeless in South Bend’s Knight’s Inn.

The efforts of the program have already made a large impact on the city’s homeless population and will help keep a number of people sheltered during the winter months while allowing time for a more permanent solution.

The funding had been set to expire at the end of this month.

Wasteful spending like this is what happens when you have Federal grants. No wonder the left loves their pork so much.

We need to go back to the old days of soup kitchens and open barracks with beds. Nobody needs to starve or freeze, but it certainly shouldn’t mean people get free hotel rooms.
