Important changes coming for those getting food assistance

(Photo supplied/USDA)

There are important changes coming for people getting food assistance.

The 15% increase in SNAP benefits provided as part of the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021, are ending on September 30.

But, that doesn’t mean they will receive less help.

Starting October 1, benefits will increase due to the recent re-evaluation of the Thrifty Food Plan.

The result of these two updates occurring at the same time is that, in October, most SNAP participants will see a slight increase to their monthly benefit.

It helps families who are low income as well. I work and receive benefits, the benefits help me purchase food when money is tight. Not everyone abuses the system, it is actually very few people who do.

I hate asking for help but if it means my children eat or not eat then I choose my children eat no matter what and I for one have busted my behind working to provide as a one parent home and raising well adjusted healthy happy children on my own but if it is a choice between my pride and joy and begging for help to feed them proper or not then I choose to raise healthy children who get the nutrition they so need and deserve even if that means I must depend on government assistance food stamps to do so then that is a godsend and I will provide for my children with the help of our government who care enough to provide nutrition for them and I will proudly do that and thankfully!!! And so should naysayers of it because these children are our country’s future!!!

There are people who cannot work due to disability and veterans need it too as well as retired people. We worked all our lives and we paid taxes, we paid social security taxes. We dont abuse programs and most of us who collect SSI benefits dont even make $800 a month but everyone else gets extra money for unemployment, child tax credits, front line workers get more money and in the mean time we only get a small raise for food stamps. There is a recession right now. Prices are going up on everything.

You have to work or you got to apply to at least 3 jobs a month on their website or lose them. That’s how it is in Pennsylvania

Took mine away saying I make too much even though I was honest about all my bills. My take home at the end of the month is less then 100 after gas to work and home bills. This does NOT include the items needed for the home monthly (weekly really) like tp etc… I no longer receive them for my child and I. Explain that to me! Some people abuse the system. But some people really need the help and don’t get it BC the system is broken and doesn’t take into account ALL of the money that goes out to live. Just saying.

Consider filing for a hearing. That doesn’t sound right. Make sure you have everything documented, and try again. You should be eligible. Consider getting a lawyer. There are Pro Bono ones. Consider talking to a nearby church, even if you aren’t religious. They tend to know who to send you to. Your situation isn’t realistic. You shouldn’t have been cut off. Either of you. Good luck ❤️

My husband and I are both on disability. I’m on Medicare he isn’t. By the time we pay bills and get his medication we have nothing left. That’s not counting the gas that we need for the multiple trips to doctors appointments. We are going to get $59 a month for food.

Hi. I’m also on Medicare and get assistance. My worker explained to me they should count in your cost of medication. But can only use so much per month cost. On my renewal, I had to give the mileage, dates and why I was going tothe doctor or pharmacy. I’m not exactly sure why on that. You should also get credit to a certain amount for phone cost. Medicare also can file for medicaid assistance for medical. Depends on every little bit of things. It never hurts to ask about these things they should be offering to you..

Some people sell their food stamps for drugs and not use them for food

Reply
Kathleen October 1, 2021 at 11:36 pm

Aot of people do. But everybody should not be punished for other people’s transgressions. Food stamps is not the source of that problem – pharmeceitical tycoons might be a much greater source of these social problems then the social programs designed to help peoe in need.

There are folks in missippi who are getting 1500 in food stamps a month but they are adding folks to there application that Don’t even live there. After this increase it’s no telling how much they will be getting. My question is how I the hell do you use that much in a month. I mean I dont get near that much no where near and can usually make my last so how can they use it?

Most people on food assistance work, and if having more would disincentivize anyone, no one would ever want a promotion. People on the bottom are no less ambitious and work no less than those at the top.
Stop using this worn out old excuse to kick down at people less well off than yourself to make yourself feel better.
You are more part of the problem than some mom trying to feed her kids.

They risk losing them forever doing it if they get caught. Then, if they are ever tight again, where will they turn? Some people *do* sell their stamps, but it’s hardly a majority and heaven help them if they get caught.

I so agree with you Deby, there are people out there that do not abuse the system. That truly do need help. That do not drive Cadillacs and buy Steaks and Lobsters with the funds that ” We The People” provide for them. That’s money that YOU! also have contributed to the system. If it helps you feed your family, by all means partake of it.
There are people out there that TOTALLY ABUSE THE SYSTEM, AND THEY WILL ANSWER TO A HIGHER ” POWER” FOR WHAT THEY CONTINUE TO DO. Best of wishes to you and God Bless you and your family.
