The FDA and CDC are investigating an outbreak of Salmonella linked to whole, fresh onions.

The FDA investigation is ongoing but it has identified ProSource, Inc. (also known as ProSource Produce, LLC) of Hailey, Idaho, as a source of potentially contaminated whole, fresh onions imported from the State of Chihuahua, Mexico.

ProSource is recalling red, yellow, and white onions imported from the State of Chihuahua with import dates of July 1, 2021, through Aug. 27, 2021. Onion types include, but are not limited to, jumbo, colossal, medium, and sweet onions.

“Throw away any unlabeled onions at home. Do not eat, sell, or serve red, white, or yellow onions imported from Mexico and distributed U.S.-wide by ProSource Inc.,” the CDC said on Twitter.

Multiple people who got Salmonella ate onions at the same restaurant, according to an investigation by the CDC.

652 people in 37 states, including Indiana, have gotten sick from the onions. 129 people have been hospitalized, but no one has died.

The number of people sick is probably higher than reported, said the CDC, because many people recover without medical care and are not tested for Salmonella.

In addition to throwing away onions, people should wash surfaces where there was contact with onions and contact a doctor if any symptoms of Salmonella develop. These symptoms include bloody diarrhea and a high fever, vomiting, and signs of dehydration.
