No contest for a Niles women in third-degree arson who fell asleep while smoking

A Niles woman has pleaded no contest to third-degree arson after prosecutors say she fell asleep while smoking.

A fire ensued at the home back in February and 35-year-old Jennifer Centerial Allen was charged. However, Leader Publications reports that Allen’s attorney said his client has significant mental health issues and was going through a psychotic episode at the time of the incident.

Allen was sentenced to 30 months-to-10 years in prison.

The Berrien County Trial Judge plans to recommend that Allen also get mental health treatment while she’s in prison.
