An ordinary traffic crash took a sudden turn for an Indiana State Trooper, when the man he was speaking to fell to the ground unconscious.

The crash happened Sunday night, just after 7:15 p.m., at the intersection of SR 19 and CR 26. The driver of an SUV veered into the back of a state trooper’s car while it was stopped at that intersection.

The trooper had just finished investigating the crash, and began to explain the associated paperwork, when the 60-year-old driver suddenly grabbed his chest and fell over, unconscious.

Immediately, the trooper rushed to his police car and grabbed his Automated External Defibrillator from his car. When Smith attached the pads of the AED to the man, the AED advised a shock was needed.

After delivering the shock, Smith began chest compressions. Eventually, the man regained consciousness, and paramedics were able to take him to the hospital.
