Indiana State troopers were involved in separate traffic incidents throughout the state over the weekend, each of them involving drunk drivers.

In Lake County on Sunday, a drunk driver swerved through where state police were dealing with a jack-knifed semi on I-65 near Crown Point.

“For no apparent reason, a 2018 Jeep swerved around a Hoosier Helper vehicle that had its emergency lights activated and drove to the far-right lane,” said Sgt. Glen Fifield. “The Jeep then swerved back to the far-left lane before swerving again to the far-right lane where it struck a fully marked 2021 Dodge Charger that also had its emergency lights activated.”

The trooper to who the cruiser was assigned was standing beside the cruiser when it was hit. He was able to get out of the way in time and was not hurt. Hakeem Bahhur, 30 of Orange, California, was arrested for drunk driving after he refused all on-site tests that troopers offered.

That same evening in Indianapolis, a trooper was taken to the hospital.

Troopers were investigating a crash on I-465 between west 56th Street and I-65 on the northwest side when an oncoming car hit a cruiser with a trooper inside. Sgt. John Perrine said the trooper was reported to be “alert and conscious” when they were taken to the hospital for treatment.

The driver that hit the trooper was also arrested for drunk driving.
