It was just after 4:00 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 21, when the woman, 63 year-old Rebecca Powell, was found unresponsive and not breathing in a cell within the jail’s medical unit.

Powell was arrested last week on a charge of murder following what appeared to be a domestic homicide incident in Clay Township.

Live saving efforts were started by both the jail staff and medical staff as well South Bend Fire Department paramedics, who were also called, but their efforts were unable to revive the woman.

Per Jail Protocol the Indiana State Police was immediately contacted to investigate the in-custody death.
