The Michigan Legislature may soon consider a package of bills that would change how the state protects groundwater.

Bridge Michigan reports that Nestlé had applied to increase the amount of groundwater it was using from wells in one community, and nearly 81 thousand people asked the state to deny the request, which was approved in 2019. Environmental groups have pushed for a change in the law ever since.

Once drafted, the new bills would target companies who bottle water in the state, and would expand the Public Trust Doctrine that says the state holds resources in trust for the people of the state.

The legislation could be ready later this month.
