Cass County man convicted of insurance fraud after stolen vehicle report

A Cass County man has been convicted of insurance fraud for falsely reporting his truck was stolen.

Prosecutors say Robert Zakrewski, 79, knew his girlfriend’s son had taken the vehicle.

Besides insurance fraud, Zakrewski was also found guilty of conspiracy and lying to a police officer during a 4 year or more crime investigation.

The truck was located burned the same day it was reported stolen.

ABC 57 News reports Zakrewski was questioned after discrepancies in his claim were noted by police and the insurance investigator about how the truck was taken.

The prosecutor’s office argued Zakrewski was trying to get our of a long-term lease agreement.

He faces up to 10 years in prison and/or a $50,000 fine when he’s sentenced in May.
