The ACLU of Indiana said Wednesday that if Gov. Holcomb’s veto of the bill that would ban transgender girls from participating in grade school sports is overridden, they are prepared to take legal action.

“Governor Holcomb got it right when he said that there is no evidence of an existing problem regarding fairness in girls’ sports, but some Indiana legislators are continuing to attack trans kids to gain political points,” said Katie Blair, director of Advocacy and Public Policy, with the ACLU.

“As Governor Holcomb mentioned, courts have already blocked similar laws in other states. The ACLU of Indiana remains prepared to take legal action to defend trans girls’ rights if necessary. Trans girls are girls, who just want to play sports with their friends. Tens of thousands of Hoosiers have shown up to oppose HB 1041, and we won’t stop now. We will continue to show up for trans youth, to stop this hateful bill,” she said.

Tuesday, Indiana Speaker of the House Todd Huston said he believed the Republican supermajority General Assembly would override the veto at their next scheduled meeting time on May 24. They will get back together that day for technical corrections in any bills.

“This commonsense legislation would protect athletic opportunities for Hoosier girls right now and into the future,” said the bill’s author, Rep. Michelle Davis (R-Whiteland).

Lawmakers need a simple majority to override the veto.
