Water distribution in Benton Harbor has resulted in a lot of empty water bottles, and a recycling effort is working on getting rid of them.
More than 5,300 pounds of water bottles have been recycled through an effort at Benton Harbor High School. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services says the recycling is being done at the school in connection with the water distribution project.
More than 10 million bottles of water have been passed out to citizens since September of last year.
When residents collect water they are also encouraged to take home large clear plastic bags to return their empties. ABC 57 reports that those bags are also available for delivery and empties can be collected from the homebound.
