Arrest made after shooting death on Leland Avenue in South Bend

UPDATE: Charges have been formally filed against a suspect in a shooting that claimed the life of a South Bend man.
South Bend Police Department officers were called around 8:30 p.m. on Friday, April 15, to the 600 block of Leland Avenue on the report of shots fired.
Upon arrival, officers found the victim,  Jamal Smith, 35, who appeared to be suffering from gunshot wounds. Smith died from his injuries.
The South Bend Police Department’s Violent Crimes Unit handled the investigation.
After conducting several interviews and conferring with the St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office, Ralph Richardson, Jr., 27,was arrested and charged with murder.
Richardson is currently being held without bond in the St. Joseph County Jail.

Smith’s autopsy is scheduled for Monday in Kalamazoo.

ORIGINAL STORY: One person was killed in a shooting, Friday, April 15, in South Bend.

The victim died due to his injuries.
The Violent Crimes Unit is handling the investigation.
