Officials have now named the man they say was responsible for a 1991 murder in Berrien County.

The death of Eric McGinnis gained national attention, and was the subject of a best-selling book.

ABC 57 reports that the case was reopened last year thanks to a witness coming forward. The report from the Attorney General’s Office says Curtis Pitts, who died by suicide in 2003, and several friends chased McGinnis to the pier and kicked him in the head. McGinnis went into the river.

An investigation from the Attorney General suggested the police had witness statements that were determined to not be credible.
