Constantine school voters to consider mill increase on ballot

Voters in Constantine will determine the fate of Eastside Elementary School.

The St. Joseph County Michigan community has two schools dating to the 1950s that will need more 20 million dollars in repairs, according to WSBT.

Education bonds are set to expire in Cass and St. Joseph Counties, and the Constantine schools are saying the time is now for a new proposal. They’re looking for a .2 mill net increase over last year’s levy, which would increase property taxes by $10 for every $100,000 of assessed value.

The bond will be on the May 3rd ballot.

$20 million in repairs? For two schools?

At the same price as building 100 REALLY nice homes? Or nearly 300 Teslas? Or 400 new full size trucks? I know they are apples and oranges, but the comparison of the dollars spent is what I am after here. I think we have become desensitized to just how much money $20M is.

So what on those two old, small schools is worth spending that kind of money to “repair”? It seems VERY excessive.
