Mistrial declared in murder case stemming from deadly Elkhart bar shooting

After close to 12 hours of deliberation, a mistrial has been declared in the case of a deadly shooting that happen inside an Elkhart bar.

Jordon Norton, 30, is accused of killing David Artley back in August of 2020.

Prosecutors say Norton shot Artley five times inside Hardy’s Bar in an incident caught on security cameras. Jurors found Norton guilty of battery resulting in serious injury and criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon.

Despite the images caught on camera, the jury was not able to agree on the murder count.

The Elkhart Truth reports Norton claimed that he acted out of fear for his life after Artley and others threatened him.

Prosecutors say Norton was heavily intoxicated and upset when he shot Artley in an argument over a stolen seat at the bar.

A hearing is set for early July when a new trial date for the murder charge may be set.

A responsible gun owner is not in a bar carrying a firearm while intoxicated. Don’t drink alcohol when you have your firearm with you. Stupid people get into fights in bars, and worse yet being drunk with a loaded firearm.
