Police in Indiana warning about online puppy sale scams

Scammers want your money, and they’re determined to get that money by any means necessary. An unusual new scam has hit Putnam and Sullivan counties: an online puppy sale scam.
Sgt. Matt Ames with Indiana State Police says scammers are listing puppies for sale on Facebook.
“They [customer] get in contact, go back to direct messaging with the individual who is the scammer, and they attempt to purchase a puppy from the scammer,” says Sgt. Ames.
The scammer asks the customer to wire money, using either a bank card or a random gift card, and the customer is given an address. But when they show up to that address, the person living there is not the person they’ve been in contact with. The scammer has essentially snatched a random address and used that to trick the customer.
“There’s been two addresses in our district where people go, knock on the door, and people answer the door,” Sgt. Ames continues, “they [customer] believe they’ll be receiving a puppy, but the people that own the residence – they didn’t have contact with them and they don’t have any puppies to give them.”
Sgt. Ames says if this happens to you, you should call police and report the scam. If you haven’t sent the scammer your money yet, then don’t. Never send any personal information. Make sure you meet the seller first, meet the puppy, check references, get a contract – do whatever is necessary to make sure this is the real deal.
And if you’re on the other end of the scam, try to be friendly to someone who shows up to your door asking for their puppy. They’re going to be upset, and likely just been ripped off. Report the scam to police.
