A man was arrested after allegedly physically abusing his girlfriend’s one-year-old child.

It happened at the 1600 block of N. Adams Streeton on June 10.

South Bend Police were called after a child was brought to the hospital with facial bruising, redness, and an eye injury.

The mother told police that he boyfriend, 21-year-old John David Sutton, took the child to the garage while she was in the bathroom.

A witness says that they saw Sutton slap the victim in the face and then helped the mother clean up the blood.

ABC 57 News reports that Sutton told officers that the child fell onto the concrete sidewalk, resulting in the injuries.

Sutton was arrested for battery resulting in bodily injury.

He is back in court on July 11.
