The Indiana Department of Health reported Thursday that Indiana’s first West Nile virus case of 2022 has been detected in a Lake County resident.
The West Nile virus has also been detected in a sample of mosquitoes collected from Steuben County. IDH explained that most people infected with the West Nile virus do not develop symptoms. However, those who do may experience a mild form of the illness, which can include a fever, headache, body aches, swollen lymph glands and rash. Some develop a more severe form of the disease that affects the nervous system, including inflammation in the brain and spinal cord, muscle paralysis or even death.
IDH recommends staying away from and disposing of stagnant water. Also to steer clear of mosquitos by wearing plenty of bug spray.
