A former South Bend Police officer accused of an inappropriate relationship with a 16-year-old girl has accepted a plea deal.
Timothy Barber was formally charged, last fall, with two counts of child seduction, two counts of misconduct and a charge of public nudity and public indecency.
According to court documents, Barber was accused of using his position as a police officer to pressure a 16-year-old girl to have sex with him.
The accusation was waged after the teen’s parents saw suspicious messages on her cell phone.
The teen told police she believed Barber was obsessed with her. She said he made frequent visits to where she worked and that he exposed himself to her.
She also said he drove her to a secluded location for a sexual encounter while he was wearing his uniform.
According to the plea deal pleaded guilty to Child Seduction and Official Misconduct.
The plea agreement caps any executed sentence at four years, and the remaining charges will be dismissed at the sentencing hearing.
Barber’s sentencing is set for Aug. 30.
