Reading scores among 3rd graders still down

Third grade reading scores are slightly lower in the area, though South Bend has seen some improvement.

The new IREAD 2022 results have been released, in advance of the 2022-2023 school year.

WSBT reports that 1 in 5 Hoosier 3rd graders does not show reading proficiency. Statewide, just under 82% of students passed — an increase of less than half a percentage from last year. South Bend and LaPorte saw improvements, but most districts did worse.

PHM had the highest ranking locally at 88.2%. The South Bend Community School Corporation, despite a 4.5% increase, ranked lowest at 58%.

The Indiana Department of Education has set aside $150 million for the Student Learning Recovery Grant Program to try and boost numbers around the state.

Maybe South Bend should teach reading skills instead of woke garbage? What a silly concept…
