Some South Bend Police Officers are credited with taking several illegally possessed firearms off the streets.

One of the officers was on patrol, on Thursday, Sep. 29, when he spotted a vehicle with an unlawful headlight modification and a license plate that didn’t match the vehicle.

The officer initiated a traffic stop in the 2600 block of West Colfax Avenue. While speaking to the occupants of the vehicle, officers smelled raw marijuana and asked the occupants to get out.

The driver attempted to flee on foot, but was quickly caught. Inside the vehicle, officers located several firearms, including a handgun with a fully automatic switch, ammunition and marijuana.

The driver was arrested on multiple charges including Possession of a machine gun, resisting law enforcement and possession of marijuana.

Three passengers, including two juveniles, were arrested/detained on drug and weapons charges.

  1. Good work S.B.P.D. on taking weapons out of this criminal’s hands. Let’s see how the prosecutor’s office and the judge keeps this dumb criminal locked up. Marijuana should be legal in the state of Indiana. Smoke weed at home, not driving around in your car.

  2. Jon Zimney, thank you for changing your verbiage from “illegal guns” to “illegally possessed firearms”. Your integrity is noted and appreciated by your readers. Usually, the guns are legal, it’s just not legal for the person to have them.

Though, ironically, in this case the handgun was actually illegal because of the full auto switch. That’s a rare exception though.

  3. It is more important to take the CRIMINALS off the street than inanimate objects that need a person to animate it. This focus on the firearms is wildly misguided. It’s the criminals, stupid!!
