The semi truck driver who crashed into a school bus, injuring 16 people has been charged with four counts of causing serious bodily injury while operating a vehicle and 22 counts of criminal recklessness while armed with a deadly weapon.

It was this past Saturday night when investigators say Victor Santos, 58, of Brooklyn, New York, struck the bus after running a red light at U.S. 30 and Center Street in Warsaw.

The bus was carrying a hockey team from a college prep school in Chicago. The team was in Michiana for a weekend hockey tournament taking place in Culver.

After having dinner in Warsaw, they headed to a local hotel. Confirming with eyewitnesses and a nearby surveillance camera, police say the semi driver ran a red light by several seconds before striking the bus during its turn.

It’s believed at least one of the juveniles was ejected from the bus.

Upon contacting the semi driver, officers detected a strong odor of an alcohol. The driver’s speech was slurred. A search warrant was applied for and granted, allowing officers to have hospital staff take a blood draw, submitted for official testing.

Two critically injured youth were taken by ambulance to a Fort Wayne Hospital. The others were taken to Lutheran Kosciusko Hospital.

By Monday, the victims’ conditions were stabilized.
