A new study says South Bend falls in the bottom one percent in the nation for median credit score.
That’s according to Wallethub.com, which says that median credit is sitting at 448 in the city. Wednesday the consumer website released their list of 2023’s Cities with the Highest and Lowest Credit Scores.
WalletHub compared the median credit scores of residents in 2,568 U.S. cities to give credit where credit is literally and figuratively due. In 2022, the average credit score didn’t go up for the first time in over a decade, hampered by economic factors such as high inflation.

Clearly this is a crisis that requires immediate government intervention. We should use huge sums of tax dollars to pay off their debt, and give South Bend residents a free 300 point “adjustment” to their credit scores.
It might sound ludicrous, but it seems to be the usual approach to “fixing” things.
What is the median income in relation to the nation? If South bend is not the lowest income then why are folks not paying their bills? This negative ranking can really hurt the cities ability to attract folks ad businesses
I’m curious to know the average FICO score in the rest of St. Joseph County. More people live outside of the city limits. Those Smart streets in the Bend are really improving credit scores.
This data for this is almost certainly deeply flawed. Peer cities in the region are nowhere near this number, and the most impoverished cities in Indiana are also well above the 400s. Flint, MI has a mean score of 634, even though the average household income in Flint is about $18k lower than South Bend.
