This April, Make-A-Wish Ohio, Kentucky & Indiana will be celebrating 40 years of creating life-changing wishes for children with critical illnesses.

The chapter was founded in 1983, and is the largest of the 58 chapters nationwide. Since its founding, Make-A-Wish Ohio, Kentucky & Indiana has granted nearly 20,000 total wishes, including nearly 6,000 from Indiana.

Make-A-Wish granted its first wish to a 7-year-old boy in Arizona named Chris Greicius. Chris was battling leukemia, and his entire community came together to grant his wish to become a police officer. That wish sparked the foundation of the Make-A-Wish Foundation and created a global movement that has granted more than 550,000 wishes and brought hope to children with critical illnesses and their families.

The first wish granted by the Make-A-Wish Ohio, Kentucky & Indiana chapter was for a child to go to Walt Disney World Resort, which remains a popular wish to this day. Make-A-Wish grants more than just Disney wishes, though. Nadene Amouri from Granger wished to create wheelchair access to Indiana Dunes State Park.

Wishes are often a turning point for a child with a critical illness. Research has shown that when a wish is granted for a child it can help them build strength, emotional and physical, to help fight their illness. Often, this can lead to quality of life improvements for them as well as creating better health outcomes.

Make-A-Wish is the world’s leading wish-granting organization. In northwest Indiana, more than 115 children are currently waiting for their wish to be granted.

Wishes wouldn’t be possible without the support of individuals and organizations who donate and volunteer their time. If you want to help through a generous donation, Make-A-Wish Ohio, Kentucky & Indiana suggests a $40 donation in honor of its 40th anniversary.

You can help make more wishes come true for children in northern and northwestern Indiana. Help restore hope with a wish today! To learn more, visit the website for Make-A-Wish Ohio, Kentucky & Indiana.
