The South Bend Fire Department responded to multiple fires throughout the holiday weekend. Three of those fires being around the same times in the early morning hours of May 31. These fires are listed below:
213 S. Wellington St.: This fire was an unattached garage fire that was put out in the first 10 minutes. This was at a vacant property.
2517 W. Orange St.: This fire was a small metal shed with Rescue knocking it down using a water can and the Engine company using approximately 400 gallons of water to hit hot spots. This structure was not on a vacant property.
Linden and Kaley St.: This fire was several small grass fires surrounding an electrical substation. This fire was also extinguished using a water can and a small hand line by the Engine company.
Regarding the blazes, the South Bend Fire Department stated:
The origin and cause of these fires remain under investigation. More information may be released in the future as it becomes available. None of these fires can be related at this time and are not considered to be suspicious. Please remember that we have very dry conditions currently outside. We ask that no one in the community is burning. This includes the use of fire pits, fireworks, and any outside trash fires. These fires can endanger the lives of our community by causing severe burns and possibly death. Please be mindful of the dry conditions and be responsible and safe by not using fire outside.
