Dowagiac man sentenced for assaulting family, police

A Dowagiac man was sentenced on Friday in Cass County Circuit Court.

The incident happened in December last year when Mathew James Lawson reportedly assaulted his father and aunt and then assaulted police when they arrived. He also threatened to shoot people and claimed he had a bomb.

Lawson pleaded no contest to resisting and obstructing police causing injury and was sentenced to two years of probation, 365 days in jail with credit for 84 served, and over $2000 in fines.

Lawson will be able to serve the remainder of his jail term on tether. Lawson has a history of mental health and substance abuse issues, and his father and aunt asked for him to be able to get help.

According to Leader Publications, Lawson now has a job and is in drug counseling.
