Three people were arrested in connection with a shooting in Michigan City Wednesday morning.
Two of those people were teenagers.
It happened around 11 a.m. at the Canterbury House Apartments.
Reports say gunshots were fired and that a person had fled the complex after being shot.
The 21-year-old victim was taken to the hospital after being located at a business nearby.
Police determined the person who shot at the victim had left the scene in an orange Dodge Charger which was spotted shortly after noon at a business.
Police pulled the vehicle over as it was leaving, and two 17-year-olds were arrested and charged, as well as 21-year-old Kyvonn Woods of Gary.
The Michigan City Police Department issued the following information:
On 6/28/23, at approximately 1010:57 amUniform Patrol Shift 1 Officers Chavez and Sails were dispatched to the Canterbury House Apartment Complex in reference to gunshots being fired. Soon after their arrival, information was received by the LaPorte County Regional Dispatch Center that a person had fled the apartment complex after being shot and was located at a business in Evergreen Plaza. LaPorte County EMS and other Officers arrived at the business shortly thereafter and located the victim. He was identified as 21-year-old John Randall of Merrillville, Indiana. Mr. Randall was transported to Franciscan Hospital for treatment by EMS for a non-life-threatening gunshot wound.
The initial investigation determined the person shooting at Mr. Randall left the scene in an orange Dodge Charger. A license plate number was also provided. At approximately 12:06pm, members of the LaPorte County Drug Task Force spotted the suspect vehicle at a business near the intersection of Pahs Road and Cleveland Avenue. Det./Sgt. Lendell Hood immediately proceeded to that area and spotted the vehicle as it was leaving the business. Det./Sgt. Hood conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle with the assistance of Sgt. Baker, Officer Chavez and Officer Sails.
The traffic stop resulted in the arrests of the vehicle’s three occupants. Juan Montgomery (17 years old) of Gary, Indiana was charged with Aggravated Battery (Level 3 Felony), Battery with a Deadly Weapon (Level 5 Felony) and Dangerous Possession of a Firearm (Class A-Misdemeanor). Montgomery was waived to adult court due to the charges being filed on him. A 17-year-old male (Driver) was charged with Assisting a Criminal (Level 6 Felony) and Possession of Marijuana (Class B-Misdemeanor). Kyvonn Woods (21) of Gary, Indiana was also taken into custody on a Porter County Failure to Appear warrant for Operating a Motor Vehicle without ever Receiving a Driver’s License (Class C-Misdemeanor).
