A South Bend firefighter is recovering from injuries after a blaze at a home on Bertrand Street.

Crews were called just after 3 a.m. on Monday, July 3,

Upon arrival, crews were met with flames showing from the rear of the small two-story structure.  The fire had vented through the roof and the rear windows of the structure. Crews were unable to enter the structure due to not being able to sound the floors and extreme hoarding conditions.

A second attempt was made to enter the structure and found the ceiling was bowing and conditions unsafe.

The fire was then fought defensively.

The firefighter who  was injured was taken to an area hospital for evaluation.

The South Bend Fire Department returned to the scene around 8:15 a.m. due to the fire rekindling.

The origin and cause of the blaze remain under investigation.
