Nearly 100 speed humps will be installed in South Bend neighborhoods.
It’s part of a strategy developed by the City of South Bend Department of Public Works after concerns were brought up over recent years.
Public meetings were held earlier this year to discuss the Traffic Calming Plan with area residents.
Public Works selected locations for the speed humps based on multiple criteria such as traffic volume and crash data.
Installation of speed humps in 24 neighborhoods is underway and is expected to be completed by November.

Smart streets proved to be a nightmare for Fire, Police, emergency responders. I have witnessed several instances of them having to drive over and across medians, curbs and dividers, nearly resulting in traffic accidents and no doubt causing damage to the vehicles. Speed bumps cause the same hazards to safety, and damage to all vehicles. emergency responders are hindered, and careless drivers and speeding criminals are at risk of losing control and causing serious damage and injury to their selves and innocent travelers. Ther are far too many streets in need of repair and maintenance to spend dollars on than speed control folly
Just call them Smart Humps, like Mayor Peter’s Smart Streets. The city government of South Bend is always doing the complete opposite of what the residents want. Smart Bend, is not very smart.
I can see the future! There will be a headline in 2025 that reads “Nearly 100 speed humps to be removed from South Bend neighborhoods”…
