A firefighter suffered a minor injury while investigating the cause of a house fire in Elkhart.
Crews were called around 8:50 p.m. on Monday, July 17, to the 1200 block of Erwin Street where they found heavy smoke pouring from a window on the east side of the small, one-story home.
Crew members quickly deployed hose lines, made entry, and located a fire in the kitchen.
According to neighbors, the home was vacant and no one was inside at the time of the blaze.
Fire crews searched the structure and confirmed no victims were found.
Once the structure was deemed safe to enter, a fire scene examination was initiated. During the scene exam, a firefighter sustained the injury, was treated at the scene, and was taken to a local hospital for further care.
