Elkhart Police have noticed an uptick in rental property scams, especially for online scams.

They’re reminding renters that they should research property and the landowner before giving anyone money.

They also say that you should check to make sure that the apartment or house is actually up for rent. You should do your research on what you are trying to rent before paying money to anyone.

They ask that you do not mail checks, give your credit card number over the phone, or provide personal information through a text message.

Other tips to protect your finances and identity include remembering that if the rental deal seems too good to be true, it probably is. They say to be safe and protect your money.
