Orchards Mall tax bill approaches $400K

(953 MNC)

The delinquent property tax bill for Benton Harbor’s Orchards Mall is approaching 400 thousand dollars.

The amount as of mid-August was sitting at more than $344,000 — which includes $54,000 for a sewer lien and $5,500 for municipal mowing at the property, according to WSJM.

Owner Durga Property Holdings is currently on a payment plan of $250 per month for its 2020 taxes, an agreement that expires in March 2024. The county summer taxes are due by September 14.

Berrien County officials say unless the 2020 and 2021 taxes, interest, penalties and fees are paid in full, the property could be subjected to foreclosure on March 31 of next year. An official representing the owner says they intend to have the bill paid by that deadline.
