Several hospitals in Indiana have been doing away with labor and delivery services in the last few months.
Perry County Memorial Hospital as well as Parkview Health in DeKalb County and LaGrange County are some of the big-name hospitals that have given the axe to labor and delivery as they try to navigate their way through a tough time in the healthcare industry.
Brian Tabor, who is president of the Indiana Hospital Association, says that overall healthcare costs are a “big problem” in Indiana and that the loss of OBG/YN services in a few hospitals is a side effect of that.
But, he said it goes deeper than finances.
“Finances and the strain on hospitals may be a portion of that,” Tabor said on Indy Politics. “But,, it is really hard to recruit and retain providers that you need to deliver that service in a reliable and safe way.”
Tabor said he spoke with leaders of one of the aforementioned healthcare systems and said that in one instance there was only one obstetrician available for that rural area and that they used to be able to get back-up from another obstetrician nearby. When one of them retired and the other moved out of state, it became difficult to be able to find another doctor to fill that void.
“The length of time that it would take to recruit another individual to that community, a rural community, so you have to pay a big premium to get someone in many cases,” Tabor said. “It’s not just doctors … you also have to have trained OB nurses.”
Tabor blames burnout from the COVID pandemic forcing nurses to retire early for the lack of obstetric nurses available. That coupled with the financial strain the industry is feeling makes for a back cacophony of issues that makes it difficult to offer labor and delivery services, Tabor says.
In the case of Parkview Health in northern Indiana, now the only option for women in DeKalb and LaGrange Counties will most likely be having to drive up to an hour away to Fort Wayne to get obstetric services.

Co the branch Covidians also screwed up giving birth in certain places??? What a load of BULL…….Lesson? Stop listening to the people in DC who claim to know what’s best in every instance. Those clowns are suppose to protect for foreign invaders or attack and make sure the post office works correctly. Pretty much all after that is not included in Article I, Section 8, the 18 Enumerated Powers of Congress. Is it any wonder after the last few years why no one wants to be a doctor???
There are 44 MILLION Illegal Immigrants in the US Now, many fertile and wanting to have a birth in the USA as an anchor baby ( logical on their part) They are NOT elegible for government birth payments Hospitals EAT this cost Hospitals are going bankrupt caring, by law, for illegals but not getting any cash in return
Why does it cost $32,093 just to give birth in America?
The US is the most expensive nation in the world in which to have a baby – and it may factor into thousands of bankruptcies each year
What happens in America if you can’t afford to give birth?
Are undocumented immigrants eligible for federal health care programs and benefits? In general, no. Undocumented immigrants are largely ineligible for federal healthcare programs like Medicaid and Medicare and are ineligible for most federal health care benefits, aside from emergency care.Sep 21, 2022
Here goes another person that don’t know what they are talking about, talk about immigration…. In order for said “Anchor babies” to work, the person has to 1. Be able to read, write and speak English. 2. Legalize themselves such as a work permit or some other form. 3. Be married to a US citizen, and already have family here in the US. With that being said most people don’t have half of that. Also in order to come here legally, you have to have $10,000 US dollars. Own a business, land or have a degree in a field that others do not want to work in, in order to come here to visit or work. You also, have to prove that you do not want to stay! Studies have proven that people are not actually coming here in droves like what the news says. There is so much better options these days than the US for these people! Places like Canada are giving citizenship without such hassle. You people don’t like to bring ones in that work. But will willing to bring in terrorist families on visas! Don’t believe me? Visit the immigration services building in Detroit, Indianapolis or Chicago. It’s FULL of Arabs and Indians! You don’t see any Hispanic people as far as the eye can see because of racism and hatred, the bar is too high and too corrupted to even help those people. You have it wrong sir. Keep believing the news. God bless.
Noone wants to be a dr here because we basically fully banned abortion. And if you mis carry the state makes you bury the fetus or recieve its ashes. It’s not cuz covid and burnout. This article seems really thinly veiled and has no real idea as to why our state is having issues. We are living in a Christians hellscape where people can’t do their job without fear of legal problems. Lot easier to leave and practice elsewhere.
“I don’t want to be a general practitioner in Indiana because they won’t let me do abortions” said nobody ever…
You honestly think obstetricians love performing abortions? You think they got into obstetrics so they can kill fetus’? You’re nuts.
It seems like firing all the healthcare professionals who (rightly) refused the COVID deathjab was a profoundly stupid idea. The only problem is that, yet again, we are all paying the price for their stupidity.
All I know is that the hospital my daughter has to use is a decent hospital with a sketchy OB on staff and If he screws up our life by killing another baby in delivery he will have hell to pay and I’m not even messing with a lawsuit ! We already have suffered with a miscarriage and this is our rainbow baby in Oct !
Or is because of hospital staff screwing things up. The fact that my friend’s daughter was born with the cord wrapped around her head and was motionless in her 1st 9mins of her life. Denied a c-section and forced a natural birth. Stuff like this is why the medical field is not to be trusted. The hypocrisy is real.
Totally fail to mention how the abortion ban affects physician recruitment. Why would you work in a situation where your license and livlihood could be taken away so readily? Other states with bans are experiencing the same thing.
What? Are you really going to claim that doctors don’t want to work here just in case they “accidentally” perform an abortion? How in the heck would you accidentally perform an abortion?
I’m pro abortion. I think all Democrats should have them. Even I think your argument is silly.
