The long-serving Sheriff has sent a letter to the Berrien County Board of Commissioners, confirming that he will retire at the end of the year.

WSJM reports that at Thursday’s meeting, Commissioner Dave Vollrath said Bailey had already announced his retirement. Since the move comes a year before the end of his term, the county will need to replace him for the final year of his term.

Bailey has recommended Undersheriff Chuck Helt to be his replacement. Bailey has spent 43 years in law enforcement, 23 of them as Sheriff in Berrien County.
