$27 million project to revamp U.S. 12 & M-51 gets underway next week

Starting Monday, a $27 million project in Niles will revamp the US-12/M-51 interchange.
The overhaul involves eliminating the US-12 bridges and ramps at M-51, replacing them with a signalized, ground-level intersection featuring “Michigan Lefts.”
The project also involves repaving and reconstructing 1 mile of US-12 and more than 2-and-a-half miles of M-51, concrete pavement repairs, sidewalk installation, new traffic signals, pavement markings, and signage.
Leader Publications reports this year’s work will involve temporary paving for traffic adjustments and excavation for the removal of the two bridges over M-51.
Next year, the bridges will be demolished, then work to rebuild the intersection will begin.
