Oaklawn will host a Grand Opening featuring a ribbon cutting ceremony and open house for its new building at 415 E. Madison St. in South Bend on Friday, Sep. 29.

The ribbon cutting will be held at 4 p.m., with an open house and tours until 7 p.m.

Since Oaklawn took over as the community mental health center for St. Joseph County in 2010, it has operated out of a historic building that once served as the Singer sewing machine cabinet factory along the St. Joseph River. But at 170 years old, and after many modifications and additions, the building was not well suited to Oaklawn’s expanding mental health and addiction treatment services.

In early 2022, Oaklawn purchased an existing building from Beacon Health System that was located next door and began a year-long renovation that includes room for new programs and services, such as Oaklawn’s mobile crisis response team and daily walk-in clinics.

At 60,000 square feet, the building features 10,000 more usable square feet than the old space. It’s home to about 250 employees who serve an estimated 12,000 people in St. Joseph County each year.

Oaklawn provides mental health and addictions treatment to 25,000 children, adolescents and adults at its campuses in Elkhart, Goshen, South Bend and Mishawaka. Oaklawn provides inpatient and outpatient
treatment, as well as residential services for youth.
