South Bend Common Councilmember Lori Hamann is calling on the City of South Bend to freeze millions of dollars in funding for Beacon Memorial Hospital.

ABC 57 reports that Beacon Health will move Medicaid patients from several facilities into partnering clinics, Health Linc and Heart City Health.

Hamann says she is concerned that the City has partnered with Beacon and is providing a $28.9 million taxable bond for the construction of parking spaces, site preparation and a potential skyway at its future Beacon Integrative Health & Lifestyle District.

She says that instead of transferring Medicaid patients, the City should hold the money until Beacon can explain the situation.

In an email to ABC 57 News, Hamann described the decision as an “irresponsible use of taxpayer dollars.”

The largest money making business in the city limits of South Bend. They claim to be a non-profit organization and pay no property taxes. The buildings are worth millions, too. There is big money in the sick care industry. Stay away from Western Orthodox medicine and big Pharma.

That’s the real crux of the problem. It’s not that the money needs to be withheld, it’s that the money should never have been going to Beacon in the first place.

The Democrats love to scream about “corporate welfare”, but guess who has been running South Bend for decades…
