Elkhart man arrested for allegedly beating woman with metal bar, throwing her down stairs

Elkhart Police have arrested a man in connection with a domestic battery resulting in serious bodily injury.

It was just after 4:30 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 23, when 911 dispatchers that a woman was battered in the 200 block of Middlebury St. Officers arrived shortly afterward and made contact with the woman on the porch of a home.

Medics also arrived and rendered first aid on the scene. The victim was transported to the hospital for evaluation and treatment of significant- but what are believed to be non life-threatening head injuries.

The 28-year-old woman reported that a known man struck her with a metal bar inside a home in the 200 block of Middlebury Street. She said he also broke her phone and threw her down some stairs.

Hours later, officers located and arrested the suspect in the 2800 block of Jeanwood Drive.

Jesus Mendoza Estrada, 32, of Elkhart, was arrested and booked into the Elkhart County Jail on preliminary charges of: Domestic Battery with Serious Bodily Injury; Domestic Battery with a Deadly Weapon; and Interference with the Reporting of a Crime.

His bond was set at $125,000 (10% cash-no surety). The case was forwarded to the Elkhart County Prosecutor’s Office for review of formal criminal charges.
