A man accused of killing a St. Joseph County Corrections Officer during a drive-by shooting has been found guilty of murder and criminal recklessness, but not attempted murder, according to the St. Joseph County Police Department.

Braxton Bird was charged in connection with the June 2022 shooting death of Rhema Harris at a home on Milburn Avenue.
Witnesses confirmed Bird and his 14-year-old brother fired shots from the vehicle. One of the bullets traveled into the home, killing Harris.
Sheriff Bill Redman released a statement calling Bird’s conviction “bittersweet.”
Statement from Sheriff Bill Redman –
The conviction of Braxton Bird in the murder of Rhema Harris is very bittersweet. Although justice will be served, our County Police family continues to miss Rhema and we send our continued love and prayers to her mother Georgia and the entire family. Her life was taken from us way too soon as the result of senseless violence committed by children barely old enough to drive. The youth gun violence in our community must stop.
I would also like to acknowledge and thank the Mishawaka Police Department and St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s office for their efforts resulting in this murder conviction.

The untrained with firearms don’t realize the bullets keep traveling oftentimes hitting innocent human beings. The boys in the hood don’t teach each other this. What was a 14 year old child doing there when the shooting was happening in the first place ?
Boyz in the hood don’t care.
