UPDATE: Elkhart SWAT officer shot identified, suspect inside home dead

The Elkhart County Homicide Unit is actively investigating after a SWAT standoff that occurred during the execution of a search warrant around 10 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 6, in the 700 block of W. Franklin St.

While approaching the residence, officers reported gunfire from inside the residence directed at the officers. One SWAT officer, identified as EPD Cpl. Jonathon Carver, was struck by gunfire; he was treated and taken to the hospital by medics from the Elkhart Fire Department for non-life threatening injuries.

Cpl. Carver was treated and released from the hospital.

SWAT, with the assistance of Elkhart Police Department officers, set up a perimeter around the area. SWAT deployed several methods to safely clear the residence after communication ceased, including the employment of chemical irritant agents into the house.

Elkhart County Bomb Squad officers also deployed a robot to breach the residence and obtain visuals of any potential threats.

There is no indication that any SWAT or EPD officers discharged their service weapons during this incident.

SWAT officers entered the home at approximately 1 a.m. on Tuesday and found a man suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. He was transported by medics to the hospital, where he subsequently succumbed to his injuries.

All individuals from the residence and the residence were secured. No further injuries were reported, and no
arrests have been made.
