Passenger train derails in Berrien Co.

(Berrien Co. Road Dept.)

Crews worked the scene of a train derailment Thursday night in New Buffalo.

Crews responded to the crash shortly before 9:30 p.m. after a Wolverine Train 355 traveling from Pontiac to Chicago with 218 passengers onboard struck a vehicle and a tow truck obstructing the tracks. There were no reports of injuries among the passengers, but two of the six crew on the train were being treated. Both vehicles struck by the train were unoccupied at the time.

WSBT reports that a fire started on the tracks as a result of the crash.

The train remained upright after derailing, but Berrien County Road Crews said a stretch of Lakeside Road between US-12 and Kruger would be closed for as much as one week while the traffic impacts from the crash are assessed and repaired.
