A South Bend firefighter fell through a hole in the floor while fighting a house fire.

Crews were called around 8 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 27 to the 1000 block of North Elmer Street, to find smoke showing from two sides of the house.

Crews say their firefighting attack was dangerous due to many items found in the home, windows being covered from the inside for egress, holes in the floors, and many items in the yard..

The firefighter who fell through the floor was able to get out with a ladder, then went back into the house to battle the blaze.

There were no residents at the home.

The origin and cause of the fire remain under investigation.
