An individual is in custody at the Elkhart County Jail after an Elkhart Police Department and SWAT standoff in the 400 block of W. Marion St, Elkhart.
Monday, January 22nd, the Elkhart City 911 Communications Center received a 911 call at approximately 3:08 p.m. of a potential fight/domestic disturbance that had occurred in the 400 block of W. Marion St. Elkhart Police Department officers dispatched and arrived shortly thereafter.
Officers made contact with the female victim outside the residence, as well as the alleged male suspect. The female victim reported that the male subject struck her and threatened to shoot her.
The alleged male suspect entered the residence (which is divided into apartments), and refused to leave the residence despite repeated attempts at negotiation. Officers secured the area, and a standoff ensued.
Several other subjects exited the apartment and were released at the scene. Elkhart Police Department officers deployed several methods to safely clear the residenceincluding less lethal pepperball and impact rounds to the upstairs windows-without success. Due to the potential for a hostage situation and shooting threats, the Elkhart County Regional SWAT team was requested, per protocol, to assist.
SWAT arrived at the residence at approximately 5:29 p.m. The alleged suspect was eventually negotiated out of the house and detained at approximately 7:53 p.m. He was transported to the hospital for evaluation, as a precaution, medically cleared, and transported to the Elkhart County Jail. No other injuries were reported as a result of the incident.
Male suspect, identified as Harvey Sanders, 53 years old of Elkhart, was arrested and booked into the Elkhart County Jail on preliminary suspicion of Domestic Battery and Intimidation.
Today an Elkhart County Judge set his bond at $100,000. The Elkhart County Prosecutor’s Office is reviewing for formal criminal charges.
