Benton Township interested in ShotSpotter technology

Benton Township is working with the Michigan State Police in an effort to bring ShotSpotter to their community.

Earlier this week, the Benton Township Board of Trustees heard the details of how ShotSpotter detects and pinpoints gunshots.

WSJM reports that Benton Township Police Chief Greg Abrams first learned of the technology from its use in South Bend, and he saw how it brought about a reduction in gun violence.

The State Police are interested in testing ShotSpotter in a two square-mile area of Benton Harbor and Benton Township. If approved, the cost would be roughly $100,000 per year, paid mostly by the Michigan State Police.
