Arrest made in deadly hit-and-run collision in Mishawaka

UPDATE: An arrest has been made one day after a deadly hit-and-run collision in Mishawaka. 19-year-old Varinder Singh, who was on a bicycle, was struck and killed around 6:15 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 13, on East 12th Street between Merrifield and Byrkit. Police say the driver was gone when they arrived. On Wednesday, officers arrested 49-year-old Robert Blankenship on preliminary charges of leaving the scene of a fatal crash.

ORIGINAL STORY:  Police are on the hunt for the driver of a vehicle who struck and killed a bicyclist, then left the scene.

The collision happened around 6:15 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 13, in the 1100 block of East 12th Street in Mishawaka.

When officers arrived, the suspect vehicle had fled the scene. The bicyclist, Varinder Singh, 19, of Mishawaka, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Preliminary reports indicate that the suspect vehicle was a blue or dark colored Chevrolet SUV.

The crash remains under investigation by the St. Joseph County Fatal Crash Team. Anybody with information regarding the suspect vehicle is asked to contact Commander Tim Spencer at 574-235-9871 extension 6441.
