Michigan considers baby boxes

Michigan is considering installing baby boxes at fire stations.

The boxes allow parents to anonymously surrender unwanted babies safely, and have become popular across the country. Indiana and Ohio already have them, and a bill introduced by a Republican State Representative in Michigan would add the state to the list.

Representative William Bruck of Erie told Bridge Michigan that the state’s current process for handling unwanted newborns is high-maintenance and time-consuming, and a baby box policy would get children into new homes much faster.

Opponents argue there isn’t a need for baby boxes in the state, and then-Governor Rick Snyder vetoed a similar bill in 2018.
