A man accused of murdering his wife is set to go to trial early next month.

Matthew Thompson’s public defender say he is proceeding with the trial, withdrawing a former plea of guilty filed but not yet approved. Thompson is believed responsible for the death of his wife, 27-year-old Ciarra Thompson.

Thompson called police on August 19, reporting that Ciarra was unconscious, not breathing and bloodied.

Court documents say Thompson reported finding Ciarra on the kitchen floor. Ciarra was already dead when officers arrived on scene, and they found a large amount of blood in multiple rooms, some of which appeared to have been cleaned up.

The Goshen News says Thompson admitted that he cleaned some of the blood up but denied causing any harm. However, he eventually admitted to punching Ciarra numerous times and shaking her before she fell and hit her head on the kitchen counter.

His trial is set for May 6.
