You may think you can easily detect a scam call, but the Better Business Bureau is warning about a recent scam call that many have fallen for.
If you answer an unknown phone call to hear someone ask “Can you hear me?” don’t be too quick to answer. The BBB says some scammers are working to get you to say “yes” before they immediately hang up.
They may say something like “I’m having trouble with my headset” or “I’ll call you right back,” while that “yes” you just said could later be edited to make it sound like you authorized a major purchase.
The BBB says if you don’t know who is calling, don’t answer. If somebody asks a question such as “Can you hear me?” just hang up. Never give out your personal information, and join the Do Not Call Registry on donotcall.gov.
If you get a phone call like this, report the phone number to the BBB Scam Tracker.

I’ve been on the Do Not Call list for years (and recently verified my inclusion), yet I constantly get unsolicited calls from “spoofed” phone numbers. Most calls start with an English-as-first-language recording, then switch to heavily-accented East Asian. Reporting the so-called “local” number calling me ain’t gonna do no good!
